"Les Misérables" soars
- Grant Butler, The Oregonian
Honest and uncynical, this is great theater...One of a small handful of American theaters licensed to stage the musical, it grabs the sprawling tale of love and loyalty in revolutionary France with both hands and delivers a mesmerizing tour de force.
- Eric Bartels, The Portland Tribune
This is the sort of unforgettable evening of theater we're lucky to experience once a season. With Les Mis, Broadway Rose is making a bold proclamation: Watch out, Oregon!
- Ben Waterhouse, Willamette Week
Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, relentless policeman Javert pursues escaped convict Jean Valjean over decades through the turmoil of revolutionary France. Epic, grand and uplifting, Les Misérables packs an emotional wallop. Its powerful affirmation of the human spirit has made Les Misérables a popular masterpiece. Penned by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer, the sung-through pop score overflows with melodies including "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Bring Him Home" and "One Day More."
Heading up the production is director Robert Hunt who recently starred on Broadway in Les Misérables in the role of Javert and was previously in the National tour. Portland audiences will remember Mr. Hunt as the title character in Broadway Rose’s stunning production of Jekyll & Hyde in 2004.
In the lead role of Jean Valjean is University of Oregon Interim Director of the Opera Theater Douglas Webster. Douglas played Valjean on Broadway and in the national tour. Fresh off the tour of My Fair Lady, Jazmin Gorzline has returned home to play Cosette. Also returning home from his tour of Evita is James Langston Drake in the role of Enjolras. The role of the relentless policeman, Javert, is played by Portland musical theater favorite and Drammy Award winning actor Leif Norby. Eponine is played by Laila Murphy and Meredith Weber plays Fantine. The comic roles of the innkeeper and his wife are played by Drammy Award winning actor Darius Pierce and Lori Paschall respectively. Single Ticket Pricing
